Mental health is an integral component of maintaining good overall health.

When individuals are mentally healthy, they are able to realize their own abilities, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and make positive contributions to their community.

When individuals experience poor mental health, they may start to withdraw and can experience debilitating symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Poor mental health can also affect physical health, as individuals might react by neglecting their physical health through inconsistent eating habits, poor hygiene, and general malaise.

We love connecting with other people because it makes us happy—good communication is the key when it comes to positive social interaction.

In relationships, communication allows to you explain to someone else what you are experiencing and what your needs are. The act of communicating not only helps to meet your needs, but it also helps you to be connected in your relationship.

There are many steps you can take to improve the communication in your relationship on your own, but there may be times that you feel like professional help might be needed. Couples therapy can be a great way to address communication problems that might be holding your relationship back.

Privacy and secrecy are similar but not the same. Privacy refers to boundaries, secrecy involves a sense of guilt or shame.

Guilt is when you feel bad for what you have done. Shame is when you feel bad for who you are.

Victims often stay in abusive relationships due to feelings of shame regarding the abuse. The toxicity of the secrecy, coupled with the victim's related feelings of shame and low to no self esteem, contribute to his/her belief that "no one else would ever want me or treat me any better than they did."
